Dion Pears: The Artist Who Painted Speed

Some artists paint landscapes. Others paint portraits. Dion Pears painted movement itself.

Born in Richmond, Surrey, in 1929, British artist Dion Pears built a career capturing the drama, excitement and romance of motion. Whether depicting a Bentley hurtling through the spray at Le Mans, a Formula One car attacking a corner, or a ship battling a heavy Atlantic sea, Pears possessed a remarkable ability to make still images feel alive.

Art ran in his blood. He was the grandson of Charles Pears, one of Britain’s most respected marine painters. Yet rather than simply following his grandfather’s wake, Dion carved out a distinctive niche of his own. In the optimistic years after the Second World War, when motorsport became a symbol of innovation and adventure, Pears found his perfect subject: speed. Following the 1950 Monte Carlo Rally, he received a commission from Renault to paint one of its winning cars, a turning point that helped establish his reputation among racing enthusiasts and drivers alike. What made Pears different was his understanding that motor racing was not merely about machinery. His paintings captured atmosphere, danger and human ambition. Cars were shown leaning into corners, tyres straining against the road, while crowds, weather and landscape combined to create a sense of theatre. He painted legendary scenes from Le Mans, Grand Prix racing and Bentley’s golden era, preserving moments that might otherwise have faded into history. Many of the sport’s leading figures commissioned works from him, recognising his ability to immortalise both machine and driver.
